Peacock’s Tail : an African Miyuki Magic fountain pen

This handmade fountain pen is one of the most complex beaded pens we have made to date. And although this particular pen has been sold, we do have some blanks from the same batch so we can make a pen that will look similar, though not identical. The tiny Miyuki Delica beads have depths and colours and sparkles that rival the showiest of peacocks and would have the peahens swooning. Delicas are among the most sought after seed beads in the world thanks to their consistent size and the brilliance of their colours.

In case you are wondering what Japanese beads have to do with Africa, it may be worth repeating what I said when we made our first African Miyuki Magic fountain pen a few months ago:

Beads have been part of southern African culture stretching back at least 50 000 years, as evidenced by the shells with holes bored into them that were discovered in the Blombos cave. From then to the days of the San and the Khoi making beads from bone, clay and ostrich eggshell to the gold beads excavated at Mapungubwe.

One last reason for us developing an African Miyuki Magic range of pens is that I (Di) have a confession: I have a bead problem, so this allows me to feel virtuous when I splurge on beads ... it's for work, you know ...🍡

African Miyuki Magic model

This model is a beaded pen that we make in a number of different variations in terms of the areas that can be beaded: either the cap or the barrel, or both cap and barrel. It is a wide pen with sides that appear parallel, however this is a slight taper between the beaded areas and the finials. The finials are very slightly conical and the cap is a flush fit with the barrel.
