[Commissioned] Lord Ganesha original hand-painted fountain pen

R23,000

Val Myburgh was commissioned to paint a pair of fountain pens, and within the broad remit of India, was given complete artistic freedom to interpret this in her own way. All the client asked was that we keep him updated with developments, and that Val signs her work. True to her nature, Val did an enormous amount of homework and gradually developed two astonishing pens. This one features Lord Ganesha, painted in a yellow gold colour. The trident on his forehead symbolises time – past, present and future – and Lord Ganesha’s mastery over it. The two tusks represent two aspects of human personality, namely wisdom and emotion, and the broken left tusks signifies the concept that we must conquer our emotions through wisdom in order to attain perfection.

A rather fitting element is that some texts say that Ganesha used the broken tusk as a pen.

Lord Ganesha’s mount or verhana is depicted as a mouse, wearing an elaborate saddle. The mouse represents the ego and the need to have mastery over the ego.

The cap band is made from zirconium (the metal, not the artificial diamond!) and it has a lovely colour, somewhere between a deep rich brown and almost-black. The band was engraved and then inlaid with 24kt gold by the very gifted engraver, Julien Marchal (@julienmarchalengraving) who is of Belgian origin and living in South Africa. The symbol is the sound “aum”, the sacred mantra that is the sonic representation of the divine. We added a deep burgundy-red section, and encased Val’s artwork in a layer of clear resin which both protects and magnifies it.

Nib:

Bock #6 in 18kt gold.
