[Commissioned] The Garuda Bird original hand-painted fountain pen

R23,000

One of a matching pair of commissioned, hand-painted pens inspired by India, this pen portrays Garuda in the form of a bird, with human hands and feet. Garuda was the verhana or mount of the deity Vishnu. He has tremendous speed, can travel anywhere and is seen as a protector, with a particular reputation for being the enemy of serpents. He is carrying a golden vase filled with amrita, the elixir of immortality. This pen’s barrel is adorned with motifs and colours typical of India.

As background: Val Myburgh was commissioned to paint a pair of fountain pens, and within the broad remit of India, was given complete artistic freedom to interpret this in her own way. All the client asked was that we keep him updated with developments, and that Val signs her work. True to her nature, Val did an enormous amount of homework and gradually developed two astonishing pens.

The cap band is made from zirconium and was engraved and then inlaid with 24kt gold by the very gifted engraver, Julien Marchal (@julienmarchalengraving) who is of Belgian origin and living in South Africa. The gold symbol is the oil lamp, representing Diwali or the Hindu Festival of Lights.  Val painted this pen on to a pen blank made by ourselves. Once she had completed the painting we encased Val’s artwork in a layer of clear resin which both protects and magnifies it, shaped the pen, added the cap band and added a bright orange section.

Nib:

Bock #6 in 18kt gold.
