Kotoko the Meerkat by Marian Binder
Kotoko, the Tswana word for Meerkat, is the third in Marian Binder’s African Legends series of hand-painted fountain pens featuring African wildlife where she has created a realistic portrait but transposed the colours to dramatic effect. Kotoko, the matriarch of her meerkat clan, has the softest eyes imaginable, and the cutest nose. Other family members are featured on the barrel in their classic pose of standing upright on an anthill, on the lookout for any danger … or any excuse for some rough and tumble.
Another name for Meerkats, by the way, is Sun Angels as they were thought to protect the village from evil & to provide comfort. Marian’s portrait of Kotoko surely reveals her as a Sun Angel.
Marian, whose work can be seen on her website made.marian.co.za is a phenomenal wildlife, people, and botanical artist. Her art is world-class, as evidenced for example by her recent invitation to be one of 44 acclaimed local and international botanical artists to create the Grootbos Floregium, Africa’s first floregium of botanical art, hosted by Grootbos Private Nature Reserve. When not painting flowers, Marian paints portraits that range in subject matter from wild dogs to warthogs to humans, and in every case she captures the essence of her subjects.

It has our logo on the finial, and the finial is beautifully rounded, rather than dead flat, which adds to the pen’s voluptuousness.
