The Heirloom Model – African Ocean

R5,450

We have called this The Heirloom Model as it is built to last. It is slightly longer than The Heritage Model, and in addition to the bronze band in the middle, it also has bronze rings at the end of the cap and barrel. We have one African Ocean & Wild Olive Wood pen in stock. Although it is not identical to the one shown in these photos, it is similar and equally gorgeous.

We knew this particular wild olive tree well as it grew outside the workshop on the farm we lived on in the Cederberg. The tree eventually burned down in a devastating wildfire that swept through the area, yet years later the stump was still lying there and we discovered the wood was in excellent condition. If all those lines are the equivalent of rings showing years of growth, then this was a very, very old tree.

This pen feels really hefty in the hand. Surprisingly, it weighs 57g (2 oz) capped or 33g (1.1 oz) uncapped which is only 4g heavier than one of our smaller pens in a resin and wood hybrid.

As can be seen from the photographs below, this model has a bronze inner sleeve which provides a complete seal to protect against any ink leaking into the cap and staining the wood. This bronze sleeve also provides strength, which allows us to make the pen slimmer than most hybrids, and ensures that the cap thread is particularly strong and well-suited to repeated opening and closing.

This pen is fitted with a polished steel Jowo #6 nib.

SPECIFICATIONS

This model has a very slight (1 degree) taper for 80% of the barrel and cap, and a 70 degree taper at the finials. It has slim bronze bands near the ends of the barrel and cap, and a wide brass band at the mouth of the cap. The Heirloom model has a bronze inner sleeve which extends beyond the barrel where it has a threaded area on to which the cap fits. As with the Heritage model, the bronze sleeve provides additional strength and seals the inside of the pen to protect against leakage. The cap is a flush fit and does not post.
