The Wilderness Collection : Heritage Model
This Collection of fountain pens embodies qualities that the wilderness holds for us: raw, rugged, wild, often breathtakingly beautiful.
We are very fortunate to live in Africa and to have experienced many different aspects of African wilderness – Di as a teenager being in an accident while out on a night drive with a game ranger (don’t ask …!), and walking back to camp through an area where a herd of elephants had been a short while before; swimming in rock pools; watching pairs of black eagles dancing an airborne ballet.
We did also once go for a walk in a nature reserve (which was permitted) but got lost and had to spend the night sleeping on the ground, knowing there might be a rhino around. In the morning, we found the road very close by and when we pressed the remote, we heard our car go beep. (blush).
Back to the Wilderness Collection: Dave has created a very special design, which we’ve called The Heritage Model, for this this gnarled, old, yet almost fragile wild olive wood. He has used brass to create a very thin inner sleeve. This provides additional strength, which allows the pen to be made much thinner than most hybrid pens, and also seals the inside of the pen against ink leakage that might mark the wood. This elegant design also allowed him to create the cap thread out of brass, which is much more hard-wearing than resin and can handle repeated day-to-day use. Weighing in at 47g capped, 27g without cap, the pen feels substantial.
Dave also prepared the stabilised wild olive wood and Di made the resin blanks. We can make a Wilderness Collection pen for you in African Wild Olive wood and one of these colour combinations:
- African Wildfire in shades of red, black and gold.
- African Ocean in blues, white and copper-red
- African Foliage in dappled greens and sunset gold.
The Heritage model
This model has parallel sides with gentle curves on the barrel and the cap, and a very thin inner sleeve of bronze. The sleeve extends beyond the barrel and has a threaded area on to which the cap fits. This sleeve provides additional strength, which allows the pen to be made much thinner than most hybrid pens, and also seals the inside of the pen against ink leakage that might mark the wood. The Heritage model has a bronze band at the opening of the cap. The cap is a flush fit and does not post.
