Sometimes when I see an artist’s work on one of our pens for the first time it elicits an immediate, soul-deep feeling inside of me. With Zelna le Roux’s Feathers painting, it was an instant feeling of peace. I would love to own this pen myself as I believe it would have that effect on me every time I picked it up and used it.
Her colours are so subtle … the gentle buff background, The browns, russets, sand and burnt siennas of some feathers, gently contrasted with the steel, teal, ivory, grey-blue and grey-brown of others. And each feather has a smattering of the tiniest bit of gold dust, that shimmers as one turns the pen. Indeed, the feathers change colour ever so slightly as the light shifts. Unobtrusive, yet so elegant.
Lana le Roux (who just so happens to be Zelna’s sister), mixed a perfect deep teal resin for the grip section that brings out the feathers’ colours magnificently.
Some more background on the process: We created the blank which Zelna then painted. Once she had completed her artwork, we coated it in a layer of clear resin so as to allow the ultimate owner to carry and use this art on a daily basis without it getting scratched or damaged. Lana mixed the deep teal resin from which Dave made a stub that connects the barrel to the grip section, and also turned the section from the same resin. He then did the final shaping, followed by a polishing and buffing. Finally we will tune the nib once the new owner has chosen the nib width they would prefer. The end product is a portable, functional, unique work of art.
