The Guineafowl by Marian Binder

R6,000

This is one of Marian Binder’s hand-painted fountain pens featuring African wildlife where she has created a realistic portrait but transposed the colours to dramatic effect. Her glamorous guineafowl has a mellow-yellow face and neon-purple wattle. The feather’s original monochrome colour scheme of black and grey with white spots has been replaced with blue and lilac spangled with dots of daffodil. The overall effect is outrageously gorgeous.

The story behind The Guineafowl is just as interesting as her colours. Firstly Kgaka, her name in Northern Sotho, is onomatopoeic with the raucous call for which she is infamous (just try saying Kg-ah-kah out loud and you will know what I mean.) For such a glamorous lady she certainly sounds coarse! Also known as the Fat Fowl, legend has it that Guineafowl earned her spots by using her loud voice to warn Cow that she was being stalked by Lion. (Of course Kgaka would argue that she is not fat but voluptuous.)

Marian, whose work can be seen on her website made.marian.co.za is a phenomenal wildlife, people, and botanical artist. Her art is world-class, as evidenced for example by her recent invitation to be one of 44 acclaimed local and international botanical artists to create the Grootbos Floregium, Africa’s first floregium of botanical art, hosted by Grootbos Private Nature Reserve. When not painting flowers, Marian paints portraits that range in subject matter from wild dogs to warthogs to humans, and in every case she captures the essence of her subjects.

The Jabulani model

SPECIFICATIONS

This is a gently curvaceous model, with a girth of 16 mm (0,6”), narrowing to a 10,7 mm (0,4”) grip section. The relatively large size of the model is to allow the artist sufficient space for their artwork, and the artwork is encased in a layer of clear resin to protect it from getting damaged during day-to-day use. Our logo medallion is embedded in the cap finial which is ever-so-slightly rounded, and the barrel finial is ever-so-slightly conical. The cap is a flush-fit and does not post. The Jabulani model usually comes with a hand-made, cap band and section ring in either Argentium silver or bronze, though this may differ depending on what best suits the artwork. Custom hand-crafted roll stops can be added.
