Bald Eagle hand-painted fountain pen

Yulia Glas’s paintings of Bald Eagles on this pen are magnificent. She says the bird on the barrel was exceptionally difficult to get right, the facial details in particular. She says she finally bought the finest paintbrush on the market, then cut off every hair on the brush except one, and used that single hair to paint the eyes and beak.

The bird on the cap epitomises the saying, “eagle eye”. No wonder the Bald Eagle was made the national symbol of the United States back in 1782, and was a powerful spiritual symbol for indigenous people a long time before that. And what a story of triumph over adversity … the Bald Eagle was heading for extinction in the late 20th century, thanks to hunting and pesticides such as DDT, however their populations have since recovered and today the bird’s conservation status is of “Least Concern”.

Yulia has painted this Bald Eagle fountain pen in a similar scheme, and potentially as a companion piece, to her Snowy Eagle Owl. The background on the Bald Eagle is a blue-turquoise, and she has used deep purples and violets for its plumage. The Snowy Owl has more silver, denoting snow and moonlight, and its plumage is a lighter mixture of white and violet, though they do look as though they belong together.

Lana has mixed a very special shimmery deep purple colour for the section material. We have added a hand-made silver cap band, section ring and logo medallion embedded in the cap finial.
